THE WAINWRIGHT BUS
The work of AW has been commemorated by one of three new liveried Stagecoach
Northwest buses on the 555 route from Windermere to Keswick.
THE WAINWRIGHT BRIDGE
It has recently been announced that, following a poll by Lancashire Telegraph
readers, Blackburn’s landmark £10-million bridge will be
named after AW.
THE WAINWRIGHT ROSE
Fryers Roses are naming a rose for A.W. in his centenary year, and an amount
from each sale of "THE WAINWRIGHT ROSE" will be donated to Animal
Rescue Cumbria.
BACK TO THE WALL
Andrew Lambert is collating information for the as yet untitled guidebook
of the walk that was undertaken in 1998 following Wainwright's route
of 1938 - "A Pennine Journey".
LOST - A TRUSTY FRIEND
Cameraman Janusz Ostrowski lost his trusty walking stick when filming near Grasmere,
at the foot of Helm Crag. The old wooden walking stick was left behind, leaning
on a wall where the path splits to Helm Crag in one direction and Easedale
Tarn in the other.
EVEREST - THE EASY WAY
The challenge put to members by the Wainwright Society
was to do one ascent of Skiddaw, each ten ascents equalling one ascent
of Everest. Andrew Leaney decided to take it a stage further.
SEVEN YEAR OLD CONQUERS THE 214
Kerry Regan, on Easter Saturday, 7th April, reached the summit of Scafell
Pike to complete her final fell of Wainwright's seven Pictorial Guides
to the Lake District at the age of 7 years and 9 months.
NEW WAINWRIGHTS WEAR COLOUR JACKETS
Frances Lincoln are delighted to announce the first ever full colour
book jackets for the Wainwright Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells.

A NINE YEAR OLD COMPLETES THE 214
On Saturday 18 March 2006, aged 9 years 10 months, Ellen climbed Scafell
Pike to complete the 214 'Wainwrights'.
WALKING WAINWRIGHTS FOR GNAAS
Starting at Easter 2006, Peter Rigg (Wainwright Society
member 658) and his two faithful dogs will be walking all the Wainwrights.
He is raising funds for the Great North Air Ambulance Service - a charity
which should be dear to the heart of all Lakeland walkers!
HACKNEY MEETS WAINWRIGHT
The Wainwright Society Secretary, Peter Linney introduced
youngsters from the Hackney Free & Parochial School to the works
of AW.
SOCIETY SECRETARY SEEKS YOUNG RECRUITS
The first Thursday in March was National Book Day, and to celebrate this, Seaton
Infants School near Workington had a 'Book Week'. This was not to be considered
as complete without reference to one of the most famous 'Lakes'
authors of modern times - Alfred Wainwright.
AW'S CONNECTION WITH KENDAL MUSEUM
Few people know that Wainwright was Honorary Clerk and Curator to
Kendal Museum
from 1945-1974. As well as being employed as the town's Borough Treasurer,
he also gave up some of his spare time for 30 years to look after the museum
collections.
ANIMAL RESCUE - CUMBRIA
In view of AW & Betty's involvement with the above charity, it was
felt that members might wish to know a little more about the history of it.
REVISING THE LAKELAND GUIDES
In 1980 Chris Jesty wrote to AW offering to revise his Lakeland
guides and enclosing two pages of revision notes on the Patterdale
approaches to the Helvellyn range.
He replied that he didn't want any revision published in his lifetime, but
that the Westmorland Gazette might be interested.
THE QUEST FOR THE MAGIC 214 - 01/05/03

WAINWRIGHT FINDS NEW HOME - 14/02/03
Frances Lincoln Publishers have successfully fought off over thirty
other publishers to acquire the rights to publish the complete works
of A. Wainwright.
