ALFRED WAINWRIGHT EXHIBITION
at the Kendal Museum
1 May to 30 August 2004

AW'S CONNECTION WITH KENDAL MUSEUM

Few people know that Wainwright was Honorary Clerk and Curator to Kendal Museum from 1945-1974. As well as being employed as the town's Borough Treasurer, he also gave up some of his spare time for 30 years to look after the museum collections.
Many records are in his handwriting, as are labels on some of the objects themselves, and he helped the museum collection survive to the present day. Many people coming into the museum still remember him sitting in the museum office, under a large no smoking sign, smoking his pipe (a practice that would not be allowed in museums today!)

The museum has a re-creation of his office as it would have been in his day, and on display are some of his original pen and ink drawings including original pages for his famous 'Pictorial Guides'. Also on display are maps drawn when he was a child, his original map of Westmorland, hand-written accounts, and drawings of items from the Museum of Lakeland Life in Kendal. There are also some personal items on display including his walking jacket, spectacles, rucksack, heavily darned socks and his famous pipe!

Kendal Museum is keen to collect any original Wainwright material – pictures, letters, etc., and it is hoped to form an archive of original material that would be available to members to view. If members have any material they would like to donate please contact me on the number below.
