Following on from the very successful sales for the 2010, inaugural Wainwright Society calendar the team behind the calendar met up on the 21st May 2010 for a ceremonial cheque presentation to Fix the Fells from monies raised from the sale of the 2010 calendar.
The calendar team, Jenny Whalley, Martin Roberts, Derek Cockell and Dik Stoddart, had adopted a major repair at the top of Stake Pass as 'our project' and a cheque for £3800, together with 2 for 1 matched funding from the Heritage Lottery fund made a major contribution towards the cost of this footpath repair.
The entire Calendar team turned up at Stonethwaite, remarkably this was the first time in the history of the calendar project that they had all got together. Meeting Richard Fox, the Fix the Fells Project Officer, at Stonethwaite the team walked with him the four miles up Langstrath to the site of the repairs on Stake Pass.
Along the way Richard explained a lot about Fix the Fells work generally, and more specifically the Stake Pass job, where the original zig-zag packhorse route is being reinstated. This route can be traced back for certain to 1819, when it was described as being in very bad condition, so footpath erosion is not just a new problem. It is believed to have been in use for hundreds of years before that date.
