Many old favourites are contained in this book including the Coniston Horseshoe, the lesser heights surrounding the Duddon Valley and Black Combe to the extreme south-west. Coniston Old Man is the highest fell in the book at 2,635 feet (803m) whilst Muncaster Fell at 758 feet (231m) is the lowest. As in the three previous titles in the series, this book contains some excellent photographs and includes several routes of ascent for each fell as well as ridge routes, very much copying AW's original research. A major criticism I have of the series is that the routes do not contain total distance to be walked and ascent for each of the fells from the starting points. This information is contained in a "ready reckoner” at the back of the book. It would make more sense, and be easier for the fellwalker using the book, if this information were in the chapter itself.reviewed by John Burland - Member No. 2 |

This, the fourth in the eight-part series of books by Mark Richards (Member Number 26) covering the Lake District fells, contains the area west of Coniston Water and south of the Hardknott and Wrynose passes. Of the twenty-three fells in the book, eleven are ones previously found in Wainwright's Southern Fells (Book 4) and eleven in his Outlying Fells (Book 8). The remaining one, Wallowbarrow Crag, was included as part of the Harter Fell chapter in Wainwright's guide.
