A COAST TO COAST WALK

striding edge

Coast to Coast Campaign

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition:

Give "A Coast to Coast Walk" National Trail status
Target: Natural England
Sponsor: The Wainwright Society

  Name   County/State  Country Comments
0300 Mrs Teresa Foster Bucks. UK
I would dearly love to walk the Coast to Coast, but because I have heard that it is not all clearly marked, I am worried about going off route, especially in bad weather in the Lake District, and becoming lost. On a National Trail the way is always easy to follow. Bring it on!!!

Great walk...but got lost several times- it needs signposting!
0298 Richard Alexander Derbyshire UK
Coast to Coast should be the permanent memorial to AW.
0297 Mike Rouse Essex UK
I completed the walk in 1995 with my son and two friends and even after all these years, i can remember the experience as if it were yesterday.
We met so many people of different nationalities, and the friendships that we formed, all be it for only two weeks made the whole experience special as we managed to spur each other on if anyone was finding the going tough. The scenery was wonderful. A truly great experience !!

This walk has earned it's place in history. And it would be a crime not to elivated to a national long distance walk.

Should have been granted National Trail status moons since.

I have walked the Coast to Coast Walk 2 1/2 times. The 1/2 (RHB to Keld) was as a leader for HF Holidays. Before the walk I had never done any long distance walking and never climbed any hills outside of south-east England.

The walk was a revelation and had a profound effect on my outlook to life and has given me the foundation stone for a love of the hills, in particular the Lake Distict to which I return whenever I can. The Coast to Coast deserves to be a National Trail as the paths do need much more maintenance than other walks due to the vast numbers of people that walk it every year. It cannot be fair that landowners and local authorities have to bear this cost. National trail status would also be a fitting tribute to AW who has given so much pleasure to so many people.

Did walk last year. At a loss to understand why it is not a recognised National Trail. It is certainly a National Treasure and deserves recognition.

I am amazed that it is not already a National Trail, having bought both old and new versions of Wainwright's book and the special maps OL33 and 34 which show it as such.
I just bought a brand new map OL19 and there is NO SIGN of this world famous footpath! Why not? I believe it is the most popular UK walk for overseas visitors and ranked second only to the spectacular Milford Track in NZ (which I have walked and is worth the long distance air fare alone!) in a recent survey of favourite long distance walks world wide.
Furthermore if it had been a National Trail the recent sale of Keld Youth Hostel by YHA, which is on two long distance footpaths might have been pre-empted but YHA think only of money and not strategic location when selling their properties. This one is lost for good and there is very little other accommodation in Keld, as I found when walking this part of the Pennine Way.
Lets make sure the Coast to Coast is not only designated a National Trail but specifically as Wainwright's Coast to Coast as his name is missing from some guides. Please do NOT call it C2C - an abbreviation that Wainwright would have abhorred. This can be left to cyclists as it then refers to an entirely different route!
Finally, I have to say that Wainwright would not have wanted the fuss of having his route designated a National Trail, as he merely planned it as an example for others on how to plan their own long distance walk. But it's popularity belies the man's intentions and he deserves to have it duly recognised.

Having walked the C2C this spring it is a wonderful walk and a fitting memorial to AW himself. Why it has not been designated a National Trail defeats me.
Surely no other Long Distance walk can combine the ruggedness and majesty of the Lakes, the picturesque tranquility of the Dales and the majesty of the North Yorkshire Moors, plus the quiet serenity of the links between. And the start and finish at St Bees and Robin Hoods Bay surely cannot be surpassed. Give this walk the status it so richly deserves.
0287 David Mould Cambs UK
As a country that has such an affinity with the sea, I feel that the coast-to-coast walk couldn't be more fitting and should be appropriately recognised.
0286 Darryl Larvin East Yorkshire UK
The C2C definitely deserves to be classed as a national trail. This route covers some of the finest walking areas in Britain. Please see sense and give the trail the recognition it deserves.
0285 Mike Lawrence Suffolk UK
My wife and I walked the path this July, and were absolutely delighted with every aspect. The designation of National Trail to this path would a fitting tribute to the great man, AW
0284 Bryan Barnett Midlothian UK
0283 Stephen Wainwright South Yorkshire UK
The Coast to Coast trip should receive recognition as a National Trail. I loved the Pennine Way but the C-C is in a class of its own for variety and beauty. A Master Crafted walking trail created by a Master Craftsman. The PW is hard slog but the C-C is an emotional gift to the Nation.
0282 Michael R Woodroofe Victoria AUS
I understand my brother Ken Woodroofe walked the coast to coast in about 1994. Ken has since died doing what he enjoyed most - following in Alfred's footsteps.
0281 Malcolm Griffiths Cheshire UK
I have walked some National Trails, Pennine Way and Pembrokeshire Coast Path, but I enjoyed the Coast To Coast the most.
As Wainwright said it has a definite start and finish at the sea, you can go no further and the variety of countryside passing through the Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and The North Yorks Moors is terrific. The C2C is known internationally with many Dutch people doing the walk when I did it. This MUST be classed as a National Trail.
0280 John Harmer Leicestershire UK
I walked this marvellous route in 1998 starting on my 50th birthday and have never understood since, why it hasn't been adopted as a National Trail. Good luck with the petition.
0279 Pam Lawes Cumbria UK
I completed the Coast to Coast Walk in 1993 with my eldest son and found it to be the most rewarding and fulfilling two weeks of my life. The route most certainly deserves its recognition as a national trail.
0278 Sue Winnard Devon UK
I walked from St Bees to KS this August with my son, who carried on and finished the walk. I intend to finish it next year. It was one of the best week's of my life and I strongly feel C2C should be one of our national trails.
0277 David Pougher Notts UK
Wife and self did C2C in June 06. At the age of 66yrs it was one of the very best experiences of our lives.
0276 Barbara Doherty Herts UK
The Coast to Coast is the greatest long distance trail in the UK. I walked it in 2002 and could not believe that it was not designated as a National Trail.
It embodies everything that is great in a long trail. Plenty of challenges, a huge variety of terrain, stupendous views. It crosses three National Parks, and to complete it in one trek gives one a great sense of achievment. Walking in the UK owes a great debt of gratitude to AW and in his centenery year it is only fitting that the C2C should be recognised with the status of NATIONAL TRAIL. Go for it walkers ~ sign up to the challenge !!

My family walked it this year, a wonderful experience. A pleasure to walk where AW had been.
0274 Tom & Brenda Elsden Teeside UK
Had a great time and met some wonderful friends along the way, one of them being Robert Marshall who now organises a reunion every year where we meet and walk in different locations. A wondeful experience that we will never forget and should be recognised as a National Trail for all us avid walkers.
0273 Mark A Maurice Michigan USA
Walked the trail (and a few extra miles of detours) in September 2005. One of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
0272 Douglas Revitt Staffordshire UK
It's about time.
0271 Jim Middlemiss Bedfordshire UK
As one of the most popular walks in UK it needs the help and protection that recognition will bring to the walk. Waymarking should keep walkers from wandering off into private property.

Completed in Sept 2000. Best holiday my wife and I have ever had!
0267 Robert Marshall Lancashire UK
I walked the C2C in 1999 on the occasion of my 50th birthday, and believe it should be a national trail. What other trail crosses the most beautiful parts of England? Out of the friends I met, we now have a C2C weekend every June. Good luck with the petition.
0266 Hilary Malden South Yorkshire UK
My friend and I completed the C2C this year and despite being good map readers, would have appreciated C2C signs within the 3 national parks. As it is not officially recognised, the only waymarkers were outside the national parks. An aesthetically pleasing symbol would suffice.

Having walked the 'Coast to Coast' July/Aug 2002 and had a wonderfull 13 days travelling by foot, I would encourage all other walkers to try it. It was an adventure in which I never had to look back (well only with fond memories of it afterwards).

I think most people have already voted with their feet! This would be a lasting tribute to the great man.

I did the walk in 1990. It was a wonderful experience and it has lived with me ever since. I made friends on the way who are still firm friends.

I heard Peter Linney on Radio York tonight. Delighted to add my support.
0252 Matt Thompson North'd UK
The parts I have walked are super. The whole walk needs the recognition and investment to become a well known national treasure.
0251 Stuart Brown West Sussex UK
Well over due recognition for a great walk one which I have read about many times and certainly intend to do in the not to distant future.
