Coast to Coast Campaign

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition:

Give "A Coast to Coast Walk" National Trail status
Target: Natural England
Sponsor: The Wainwright Society

  Name   County/State  Country Comments
0450 Dean Halsall Lancashire UK
Hi, I run Northwestwalks a company providing walking holidays in Northern England.
Wainwright's Coast to Coast is our most popular holiday, and its my favourite too. Although January has passed I gladly offer any support I can to have the Coast to Coast made into a National Trail. It surprises many of my clients when they discover the the route is not a National Trail.
0449 Peter Smith West Yorkshire UK
It does seem ironic that this, probably the most popular long distance walk in the UK is not a national trail whereas some, that probably are not known even by those through whose locality these walks pass, are.
0448 Eddie William Powell Cumbria UK
good luck....
0447 Mr & Mrs Frank Strutt South Yorkshire UK
It is one of the worlds the great walks and I believe it should have its own officially recognised status.
0446 The Reverend Simon Reynolds St Paul's Cathedral, London UK
The Coast to Coast Walk is one of the great achievements of Alfred Wainright, and has provided countless walkers with an introduction to the glories of the North of England. I am astounded that it still has not been officially recognised as a route. This is part of our national heritage and should be recognised as such.
0445 Paul Allen Bedfordshire UK
It is more than 20 years since i first did the walk and I have smoe great memories of it.
0444 Mr Mrs S J Turner Hampshire UK
We think it is important that the Coast to Coast is given National Trail status so that it receives the financial support required to maintain it.
0443 Barry Brown Cheshire UK
I have only walked short sections of the path, but everybody that I have met that has done the whole path have enthused about it. Good luck to your campaign.
0442 Mike Smart Worcs UK
Make it so.

I walked the c2c in April 2000 with four friends, and we plan to repeat the joyous exercise in 2008.
A magnificent walk, combining the towering scenery of Lakeland with the subtler charms of the Dales and North York Moors, but it's the small hostelries and friendly shop and cafe owners that linger longest. Anything that will safeguard their businesses, as well as popularising the walk itself is a grand endeavour.
0436 Carl Stonier N. Lincs UK
This route should absolutely be classified as a National Trail, thereby inviting better maintenance and signposting along the way. Certainly, when myself and my wife did it in May 2002, the moorland around 9 standing rigs was unpassable.
0435 Phil Mizon Derbyshire UK
I have walked the Walk twice, and would go again given half the chance. Do I get to vote twice ?
0434 Bill Gallon Tyne & Wear UK

Wainwright's Coast to Coast - a great English institution! Let's have it recognised guys!

Our two children grew up walking the C2C in stages from 1995-2004: spanning minimum 6yrs old to max 17yrs (has anyone taken longer?!). The whole trail is signposted and RoW mainly sorted. All the major establishing work has been done, so why can't it get National Trail status?
0427 Geoffrey Yarnell   UK
0426 N M Rogers Cheshire UK
Our first long distance walk way back in 1992 I think, making a wonderful introduction to the delight of this pleasure.
0425 K Ingham Yorkshire UK
Walked it in the 80s. Good luck with your campaign.
0424 Shirley Moss Cumbria UK
0423 George Dyne Berks UK
Good petition, I hope someone is listening.

This trail is the best in the country giving an experience of 3 National Parks. If any trail should have National Trail status this is the one.
0419 John & Patricia Baker Cumbria UK
We fully support this venture and hope to walk it soon.
0418 Mary Thoms Michigan USA
In 2004 I walked the coast to coast, and fell in love with Northern England. In May of 2007 I will be walking it again. In all the long distance walking I have done... hands down, your lovely coast to coast is the top of my list! Thank You.. Mary
0417 Bob Gatherer Cumbria UK
I would like to afford my support to the proposal to make Wainwright's Coast-to-Coast walk a National Trail.
0416 David Uzzell Surrey UK
Long overdue. And if it is called the Wainwright Coast to Coast Walk it will be a fitting memory to his outstanding contribution to walking and recreation in the UK. He deserves nothing less.
0415 Bob Hancock Hampshire UK
Ideal candidate for a national trail.
0414 Peter Hall Fife UK
Never done it in a oner, but have done most in bits.
0413 Geoff Moores Devon UK
Completing the C2C was memorable for me, if only because of the people I met and accompanied over the two weeks.

Although walking solo, I kept meeting the same people who started and finished on the same days I did. A varied collection, from Australia to Cyprus, and that tells us how this iconic route has a status which is still not adequately recognised 'officially'. It is a latterday pilgrimage route! Please, let us have it there as a National Trail-the public is already voting with its feet.
0412 Richard Smith West Yorkshire UK
I thoroughly enjoyed the Coast to Coast, much better dare I say than some other National Trails.
0411 Trevor Tattersall Lancashire UK
I wish to sign the petition on behalf of the members of Morecambe Red Rose Ramblers who are:
David Beckingham, Philippa Birkett, Michael Brooks, Colin Crashley, Gina Darlington, Elaine Fryer, Julian Fryer, Richard Martin, Michael Naylor, Cynthia Naylor, Brian Ogston, Peter Robinson, Brenda Tattersall, Kenneth Tattersall and myself, Trevor Tattersall.

We believe Wainwright's Coast to Coast should be recognised as a National Trial because it is one of the most popular long distance walks across some of the most beautiful, diverse scenery and is by all ages.

The inspiration for my C2C walk in May 97 were the pictures of Derry Brabbs and for that I thank him. The introduction to Wainwright and the Coast to Coast walk were life changing events.
0405 Janine Evitt Tyne & Wear UK
I did the Coast to Coast walk in 1995 and it was great and also atempted to do it again a few years later but did not complete due to a knee injury.
0404 Lynda Fraser Quebec CAN
We are to walk St. Bees to Kirkby this summer, and of course, I am researching now. As a Canadian, I do not have the same stake in making this walk a National Trail, but from all I read, this action is well merited. Good luck. LF
0403 Alan Southworth Lancashire UK
Having completed the C 2 C in July '06 with a walking colleague, we found the trip to be an enjoyable challenge, and one we shall certainly be repeating. We only encountered a couple of problem sections, which could be improved with better signage. The C 2 C certainly deserves national recognition.
0402 Ian Stevens Notts UK
I have attempted the C2C 3 times now, 2008 will see me try for the 4th and hopefully successful time. Best of luck, this deserves to be recognised, if only for AW.
0401 Tim Scott Kent UK
I first walked the C2C in 1984, and again in 1986. What an excellent walk. Trouble is, it's become so popular it's like a motorway for walkers. Is this what AW would have wanted? I think not. Maybe having official status will help to regulate the situation.
