The Great Lakeland Challenge
214 Mountains in a week - 14th/ 21st May 2005

In May 1955 Alfred Wainwright published the first of his Pictorial Guides to the Lake District. Since then the series has sold almost 2 million copies. AW as he's been known to generations of fellwalkers is still the undisputed master of the mountains. 2005 was the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells.

The Wainwright Society marked this event by recording the ascent of all 214 fells in the Pictorial Guides and those in the Outlying Fells in one week in May.

Registration was free to members and £10 for non members.  Payment of this fee, however, carried automatic membership of the Society for 2005.  The benefits of membership include quarterly issues of the Society magazine -Footsteps, discounts on books, guest houses etc. entrance to activities such as walks and lectures. Three pounds of each registration fee will be donated to the Lake District Tourism and Conservation Partnership which organises footpath repair and other environmental projects in Lakeland. £570 was successfully raised by The Wainwright Society during the week long event which was put to good use benefiting the upland footpath on Thorneythwaite Fell in Borrowdale.

This footpath runs up onto Glaramara from the Borrowdale valley. There are a few sections, generally on the steeper slopes, where the surface has washed away causing widening of the footpath. These sections need careful stone pitching to prevent the further spread of erosion.
