Derry Brabbs

Present were 95 members and a number apologised for their absence.

In the absence of Chairman Eric Robson, Peter Linney chaired the meeting following an agenda distributed at the meeting.

John Pulford, Treasurer said that the finances of the Society are in good health and the year ending September 2005 generated a small surplus, despite a poor result for the lecture at the Theatre by the Lake in October 2004. The Great Lakeland Challenge proved to be a great success generating nearly 300 new members, bringing the total to over 600, and much media interest.  

Whist, as expected, the membership has fallen back to over 400 the underlying trend is upwards since the formation in 2002. Several 'new' members in 2005 joined to do the 'Challenge' and sometime two or three from one family, who on renewing are only required to have one membership as it cover all family members.  Morag Clement announced that members, who can produce a current membership card, will have free access to Kendal Museum, thus enhance member benefits.

The Chairman - Eric Robson, Treasurer - John Pulford, Auditor - David Pitt and Secretary - Peter Linney were all returned to office for a further year.

The Challenge for the current year is the Westmorland Heritage Challenge, seeking members who will walk around the perimeter of one or more of the 110 parishes of the former county of Westmorland and as depicted in AW's book of the same name.  Two thirds of the 110 have been claimed but several interesting ones remain.

David Pitt described the progress made on the Pennine Journey project and said the all of the 18 sections of the long distance walk have been walked, recorded, written up and test-walked. Members will be kept up to date on progress.

The 50 Best Walks project had not attracted as much interest from members as had been hoped but this may have been due to the exacting demands of the specification and these will be reviewed and any revised specification will be published on the website.

The Wainwright Memorial Lecture with Eric Robson at Rheged in October 2005 was a great success and was both interesting and challenging.  The 2006 Lecture is to be given by Radio 2's Stuart Maconie and we look forward to a most interesting talk from a keen walker and popular programme presenter. This is to be held at Rheged again on October 21 and members will be informed about tickets etc.

The meeting closed before 3.0 pm after which Derry Brabbs delighted the audience with a talk on his dealings with AW and showing wonderful photographs of scenes familiar to many.
