Sixth Annual General Meeting
of
The Wainwright Society
Saturday 21st March 2009
at Staveley Village Hall, Cumbria
Chairman, Eric Robson welcomed 61 members of the Society to the sixth Annual General Meeting.
Before the formalities of the meeting, Terry Fletcher, Editor of Cumbria and until recently of its bigger brother The Dalesman , and an Honorary Member of the Society, talked to members about his long ‘relationship’ with AW – whom he never met. A life-long user of the Pictorial Guides and a devotee of these unique works, Terry has, in his professional career, also written many thousands of words on ‘things Wainwright’.
Indeed, he recounted having been given a questionnaire presented to AW at the time of the publication of Book 1,The Eastern Fells. This questionnaire was submitted to AW by Bill Mitchell, in desperation following an abortive interview where AW answered every question with another. The completed sheet was found in AW’s effects after his death and given by AW’s biographer and Society Vice-President Hunter Davies to Terry who now claims the unique record of publishing the first ever AW interview but several years after his death!
The talk was warmly applauded by the meeting and Eric thanked Terry on our behalf.
The sixth Annual General Meeting was opened and the formal business was satisfactorily completed. The minutes will appear on the member’s only page in the next few weeks and will be included with the June issue of Footsteps.
The Chairman thanked all who had made the journey to Staveley and had contributed by their presence at the annual meeting.
