Events > 2012 An Evening with Alfred Wainwright A capacity audience of approximately 130 people attended this event. John took the audience on a journey through AW's life from his humble upbringing in Blackburn through his life-changing visit to the Lake District in 1930 and then his eventual move to Kendal in 1940 and the fifteen years spent writing the Pictorial Guides between 1952 and 1967. During 2010 & 2011 John gave a further seventeen presentations in Arnside, Baildon, Blackburn (2 different groups), Brindle, Durham (2 different groups), Easingwold, Haltwhistle, Kendal, Marple, Mellor, Penruddock, Pickering, Ramsbottom, Richmond and Windermere. As a result of many of these talks, many thousands of pounds have been raised for various charities throughout the North of England and also refugee & children’s charities abroad. John Burland, the founder of the Wainwright Society, has written and devised a dramatic presentation of the life and works of AW. This was first presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature festival on Thursday 15 October 2009.
