Everest - The Easy Way 50 Wainwright Society Members undertook the task of climbing Everest. Not only that, but they each paid at least £5 for the privilege! The proceeds of this appeal are for The Keswick Mountain Rescue (KMR). Well actually they all agreed to climb Skiddaw during the time when the Keswick Mountain Festival was being held from 16 to 20 May 2007. Skiddaw summit is about 3000 feet above sea level and Everest is about 30,000 so Peter Hardy (member 5) had the idea that for every ten promises to make the ascent we would achieve one Everest. Honorary Member Sir Chris Bonington is Patron of the Festival so the Everest Link was felt to be right. One member, Andrew Leaney (member 9), actually made ten ascents and his report is linked here, and also on his excellent web-site where many pictures can be seen of his epic adventure. Andrew has also raised £876 for the appeal which, in addition to the prodigious walks is a magnificent effort for this most worthy cause. Another member, Mick Boddy (member 572) also raised £280 in sponsorship and a number of others gave donations well in excess of the £5 minimum.
Altogether by the 17th May when Secretary Peter Linney presented a cheque to the Mountain Rescue at their quiz night at the Dog & Gun, Keswick, we were able to send £1,300 but since then the number has risen significantly and the grand total now stands at £1,863. When all moneys are accounted for the balance will be handed over to the KMR.
Incidentally the quiz was won by the Wainwright Society team! The picture shows Jayne Hardy (member 5) with the quiz prize a keg of ale (named Thirst Rescue) from the Lakeland Brewery. Thanks to all who took part and contributed in any way. Well done! Peter Linney |
