Few people know that Wainwright was Honorary Clerk and Curator to Kendal
Museum from 1945-1974. As well as being employed as the town's
Borough Treasurer, he also gave up some of his spare time for 30
years to look after the museum collections. |

A fascinating exhibition looking at the life and works of Alfred Wainwright
the well known fell walker, author and artist, opened at Kendal Museum
on Saturday 1 May 2004 and will continue until Tuesday 31 August.
Wainwright's hand-drawn and hand-written pictorial guides to the Lakeland
Fells have been in use for over 40 years, and are still popular. Many
of his original pen and ink drawings, maps, letters, and first editions
of his books, as well as personal belongings such as his walking boots
and socks (heavily darned!) will be on display. The exhibition will
comprise of both items currently on show in the museum, and those specially
lent for the duration of the exhibition.

us to explore the work of the legendary fellwalker, author and artist
Alfred Wainwright, and view many of his drawings and personal
belongings.
This exhibition is part of 2004's Museums & Galleries Month celebration
of 'travelling and the art of travel.
