The 2015 Challenge
The Tarns and Waterfalls of Lakeland

Saturday 2nd May - Saturday 23th May 2015

Water is an integral part of the Lakeland landscape and reading Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides you realise that he had a fascination with water in all its forms: lakes, tarns, pools, tumbling becks, waterfalls and cascades.  All featured in the writing and sketches that filled the pages of his books.

Society members taking part in the 2015 Challenge will visit some of the tarns, waterfalls and cascades recorded by Wainwright in his seven Pictorial Guides and The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.

In planning the route, challengers should consult the relevant guidebook where maps, ascent diagrams and sketches will all be of assistance in locating the objective.  Members are also strongly advised to consult a 1:25000 OS map in their planning and on the walk if in doubt about the route or poor weather conditions limit visibility.
Note: Access to the edge of some tarns and waterfalls can be difficult and members should exercise normal care and judgment for both themselves and others in the group.

The Society will be raising funds for our two beneficiaries in 2015: Animal Rescue Cumbria (ARC) and the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs Association (LDMRSDA).

Animal Rescue Cumbria is a charity that was supported by Wainwright during his lifetime.  Next year is the 30th anniversary of the Animal Shelter at Kapellan and the Society is pleased to raise funds to support the work of taking in unwanted dogs and cats and helping to re-home them. In 2015, it will be the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Search and Rescue Dogs Association (now, the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs Association) and the Society is hoping to raise funds to replace all the training radios of dog handlers, which are a vital part of communication whilst out on the fells.  SARDA logo
