New Wainwrights wear colour jackets
press release by Francis Lincoln

Frances Lincoln are delighted to announce the first ever full colour book jackets for the Wainwright Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells. As part of their on-going investment in A. Wainwright and his remarkable legacy, Frances Lincoln have begun the first comprehensive programme, authorised by the Wainwright Estate and with the full support and approval of the family, of revising and updating all of the world famous Pictorial Guides. The new look colour jackets, all based on photographs by A Wainwright’s honorary photographer Derry Brabbs, will be appearing on the updated editions of the Pictorial Guides.

Every map, every diagram and every word of text has been checked. Maps and diagrams have been meticulously corrected. Every footpath has been re-walked, every ascent re-visited. As a result of this review, Wainwright’s original descriptions and route suggestions have, where necessary, been corrected. Altitudes and place names have been updated where appropriate, and information has been added on parking places near the start of the ascents. To make the books easier to use, paths and route indicators have been picked up in a second colour.

Both Book One: Eastern Fells & Book Two: Far Eastern Fells of the updated editions will be re-jacketed with new look colour jackets in September this year, and the forthcoming titles will be published with the new jackets. Book Three: Central Fells (9780711226142, £12.99) will be published in September this year.

The revisions have been undertaken by Chris Jesty, who assisted Wainwright with the maps on his last two large-format books. Chris trained as a cartographer with the Ordnance Survey and Wainwright himself said, not long before he died, that if ever the guides were to be revised, Chris Jesty should be given the job.

John Nicoll, Managing Director, comments: “The Wainwright guides continue to be enduringly popular but we are always looking for ways to keep the Wainwright name prominent in the walking market. We feel the full colour jackets are the next logical step for these guides. They will undoubtedly make them more obviously relevant and appealing to a new generation of walkers, as well as significantly increasing their impact in the shops. The jackets will have the additional benefit of helping clarify the situation in the bookshops, where there has sometimes been confusion between the original editions, which we have made a commitment to keep in print, and the new ones.”
