Orrest Head view indicator

In late 2011, the Society was approached by Windermere Town Council asking us if we were interested in collaborating with them to reinstate the view indicator on its plinth at the summit of Orrest Head. We have taken the decision to involve ourselves in this important project.

There has been a view indicator on top of Orrest Head for many years and we understand that it has been vandalised three times. The present plinth of Westmorland slate blocks has been there, probably since 2002, when its predecessor was replaced to mark the centenary of the gifting of the site for public use.

The Society is undertaking research to establish the type of construction materials for the view indicator and its base that will best combat the weather and possible vandalism. In conjunction with Windermere Town Council, the job will be put out to tender with local companies. The project also will include a new notice board at the foot of the ‘tarmac’ path, describing the route and other information, which will also receive Society support.

The total cost of the project is not known at this point but preliminary estimates show that we could be looking to provide over £1,000 towards this important piece of Wainwright history and we can think of nothing more appropriate in our tenth year of being as a Society.

It is hoped that a suitable date for the unveiling of the view indicator and notice board will be mutually agreed with Windermere Town Council and that it will coincide with our 10th Anniversary programme.

Anyone wishing to donate towards the cost of this project can send their cheque, payable to The Wainwright Society, to Kendal Museum, with the address headed up ‘Orrest Head’. Alternatively, payment can be made by bank transfer, with ‘Orrest Head’ in the reference field. Bank details can be found by clicking here.
