Included in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland is High Knott (Williamson’s Monument), the end of the low ridge on the west side of the Kentmere valley, two miles from Staveley. During the past forty years, this walk has been on the itinerary of many fellwalkers in their quest to complete the Outlying Fells. Unfortunately, AW’s route took people on to private land and in recent years the landowner has made it clear that walkers are not welcome, the reason being that High Knott is not open access land and he grazes stock in the fields. Unfortunately, there have been a number of cases where inconsiderate walkers have left gates open allowing stock to escape and in trying to scale the field walls have caused damage, which has incurred costs to the farmer in repairs.

The Society has been in touch with the landowner to discuss whether members might be allowed limited access to enable them to climb the fell as part of the completion of the Outlying Fells. Unfortunately, this has not been successful.

In view of this development, the Committee has agreed that completions of the Outlying Fells can be registered with the Society that exclude High Knott from the list of fells. Should the situation change in future, members will be advised of this in Footsteps.
