An Evening with Alfred Wainwright

John Burland - founder of the Wainwright SocietyJohn Burland, the founder of the Wainwright Society, has written and devised a dramatic presentation of the life and works of AW. This was first presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature festival on Thursday 15 October 2009.

A capacity audience of approximately 130 people attended this event. John took the audience on a journey through AW's life from his humble upbringing in Blackburn through his life-changing visit to the Lake District in 1930 and then his eventual move to Kendal in 1940 and the fifteen years spent writing the Pictorial Guides between 1952 and 1967.

During 2010, John gave a further seven presentations in Baildon, Brindle, Haltwhistle, Kendal, Richmond, Pickering and Windermere and in January 2011 he spoke to the walking group leaders from Durham County Council. Audiences at these events ranged from approximately 50 at Richmond to over 200 in Blackburn. Over shows in 2011 included presenting his talk at Penruddock (Near Penrith) on Friday, 1 April at 8 pm in aid of the improvements to Penruddock Village Hall.
