Book Collection and Bibliography

Wainwright-books-in-archive

Alfred Wainwright is probably best known for his Guidebooks but, when the total bibliography is inspected, his writing and, particularly his drawings are seen to be of at least equal importance. His reputation and the popularity of his work has of course led to numerous other books which are based on his achievements and story. The Society has never set out to be a ‘collector’ of his books or memorabilia; it is not in our constitution. Where we have had the opportunity to acquire items which are in themselves unique and contain original material we have, on a very selective basis, tried to do so and, where successful, donated these to the Cumbria Archive to enable future generations to be able to see them.

In 2014, it was agreed that the Society should however embark on a project to acquire a copy of every one of AW’s published items, the purpose of which was to try to ensure that a copy of his work was available for the future. We were not interested in which edition or impression was involved although the aim was to acquire a copy which was un-amended from his original publication. Publications ‘about AW’ were not included. However, where there was other material to which he had contributed in some way (e.g. a foreword, an introduction, or the inclusion of drawings which had not been reproduced in his other publications) we included these in our project. The intention was to donate the collection to the Cumbria Archive where it could be inspected and also used for research work.

An appeal was made to our members to donate any copies that they could give and this resulted in a tremendous start to this collection; in fact well over half of the titles we identified were supplied by members, with generous donations from the Wainwright family as well. Other books were bought, mainly on-line. All books were wrapped in protective material and stickers placed on the inside cover acknowledging who had donated the book where appropriate. The final collection was passed to Cumbria Archive in October 2014, less than six months from the start of the project.

The pictures here show the main items of the collection in a display and after they were lodged with Peter Eyre at the Cumbria Archive.

The publication list below covers the items in the project and is believed to be a complete bibliography as well as some other relevant publications which include original material by AW. If we have missed any please let us know!

‘In my introductory remarks to Book One I described my task in compiling these books as a labour of love. So it has been. These have been the best years for me, the golden years. I have had a full reward in a thousand happy days on the fells.’ Book Seven The Western Fells. Some personal notes in conclusion.
