Animal Rescue Cumbria (Kapellan)
Organisations
Animal Rescue Cumbria – AW used his considerable royalties to establish the Kapellan animal shelter near Kendal. The Wainwright Society continues to support ARC and are donating all proceeds from the sale of their book ‘Encounters with Wainwright’ to the charity.
The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association (LDSAMRA) comprises the 12 teams across Cumbria and the Lake District. The Wainwright Society has supported LDSAMRA by raising funds, and maintains a close relationship with the teams.
Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs is a specialist team dedicated to the training, developing and deploying of Search Dogs within the Lake District Mountains and Fells to search for missing people. The Wainwright Society has donated to the team on various occasions, most recently to replace their body radios.
The Blencathra Centre provides field courses for schools and universities at all levels as well as courses for individuals and families. The Centre was our main fundraising beneficiary in 2019.
The Calvert Trust – The Calvert Trust has over 30 years of experience in delivering exciting, challenging and enjoyable outdoor activity adventures to all ages and abilities. The Society has supported the Trust in the Lake District as our main annual beneficiary on two occasions.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust AW and Betty were keen members of the trust and the Society chose this organisation as one of its beneficiaries to support their Juniper project.
Great North Air Ambulance Service – The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) brings pioneering pre-hospital care to the scene, rescuing hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year and was our main beneficiary in 2018
Fix the Fells has the mission to protect our spectacular Lakeland fells from erosion by repairing and maintaining the upland paths. The Society has raised funds for them on more than one occasion.
Lake District Foundation – The Wainwright Society is a member of the Cumbrian conservation charity Lake District Foundation, which works with visitors and tourism-related businesses throughout Cumbria to provide funds for conservation and raise awareness of environmentally sustainable practices.
The Ramblers’ Association is Britain’s biggest organisation working for walkers, a registered charity with 137,000 members across England, Scotland and Wales
Wainwrights On The Air – A non-profit group of amateur radio enthusiasts encouraging people to have a go at the 214 Wainwright Fells as part of their enjoyment of amateur radio
Fylde Coast Ramblers – A friendly and unpretentious walking club based on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire. Popular destinations include the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Derbyshire’s Peak District and Lancashire. New members are very welcome
Lakeland LDWA is a friendly group of the Long Distance Walkers Association organising social walks, an annual group away weekend and challenge events in some of the most scenic locations of the UK
Natural England is the government’s adviser on the natural environment, providing practical scientific advice on how to look after England’s landscapes and wildlife. The site has information about Open Access, Protected sites and species, Parks, trails and nature reserves, land management and other similar subjects.
LDWA Hill Walkers Register – includes a register of all those individuals who have reached the summit of all the hills featured in Alfred Wainwright’s Guides to the Lakeland Fells

Resources
Wainwright’s Lakeland Sketches is a website created by Society Honorary Member Richard Daly, with contemporary photographs taken by him to match all 400 of Wainwright’s sketches in his 5-book series of Lakeland Sketchbooks. Richard previously created the Society’s Sketchbook Project, which comprised similar photos taken by Society members.
Kendal Archive Centre, part of Cumbria Archives, houses, amongst many other resources, an extensive collection of material about AW as well as The Wainwright Society’s own Book Collection of all of AW’s published works and important items donated or on loan from the Society. Public access is available via an online catalogue and in person; check their website for details of opening times.
Striding Edge Productions – Based in the Wasdale Valley in the English Lake District, Striding Edge Productions started with programmes about Wainwright. Eric Robson, who is one of the directors of the company, was Wainwright’s walking companion in the classic television series. They now offer a wide range of outdoor DVDs and books along with other products which will appeal to all outdoor enthusiasts
A Pennine Journey is a challenging circular walk of 247 miles, passing through the wonderful variety of terrain and scenery the north of England offers whilst touching on all the major rivers in the region. It recreates the momentous expedition by Alfred Wainwright in 1938. This site gives a history of AW’s original publication and details of the new book published by Francis Lincoln in 2010 along with other interesting items, including the ‘Pennine Journey Supporters Club’
Walkingworld website has a huge resource, by subscription, of over 7000 walking routes of varying lengths and grades, contributed by more than 450 walk authors and is a valued supporter of the Society
Kendal Museum – Alfred Wainwright was Honorary Clerk and Curator to Kendal Museum from 1945-1974. The Museum has many of his original pen and ink drawings on display including original pages for his famous ‘Pictorial Guides’
White Lion Publishing is a division of The Quarto Group are the current publishers of Wainwright’s walking guides. The society has a discount arrangement for members wishing to purchase on-line.
The Outdoor Guide (TOG) is a resource for people, in particular families who love the outdoors. TOG is a curated site that aims to pull together all sorts of information for walks all around the UK. From outdoor related gear and gadgets, to hotels and campsites, not forgetting the latest news from our outdoor based partners.
GPS Waypoint Files for Wainwright’s hill tops. Is Phil Newby’s GPS Mountain Resources has Phil has also recorded GPS routes for much of his own Wainwright bagging.
