The first Society Poetry Competition was held in 2011. The subject needed to relate to AW, his work or the locations he is associated with, or Society activities. ‘Poems’ could be in any format, for example – a sonnet, limerick, free verse, an ode, an elegy – whatever the author wished. Entries were to be original pieces of work and written entirely by the member (or member’s family) and not previously published in any format. Following the announcement of the winners it was decided to produce an Anthology containing all entries, this and the prizes being kindly sponsored by Francis Lincoln Publishers. The resultant booklet was A5 in size, has 36 pages plus cover and is lightly illustrated with appropriate drawings by AW.
It was decided to hold the second competition in summer 2020 when many people in UK were still in some form of lockdown due to Covid-19. Like the first, this was only open to members (including family members). Entries closed at the end of July 2020 and judging took place in August with the winner announced later that month.
As with the first competition the entries were collated into an Anthology booklet which can be bought via the Society shop. This booklet is also A5 in size, has 24 pages plus cover and is illustrated with appropriate drawings by AW. Proceeds from the sale of the booklet will be donated to our 2020 beneficiary, The Lake District Calvert Trust.
A limited number of Poetry Competition Anthologies are available for purchase in our Merchandise Shop
