Wainwright regarded the passes as ideal expeditions for those ‘who admire mountain scenery and favour the loneliness of the wild recesses, yet because of disability or lack of energy in their later years cannot aspire to the ultimate summits and dare not venture too far upwards’. Wainwright on the Lakeland Mountain Passes p. 7. Published in 1989, this was the last of Alfred Wainwright’s large format books to be produced in his lifetime.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the book, the challenge for Society members was to undertake a walk to the mountain passes and hauses featured in that book and in Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides and The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. The book recounts their stories and is A5 with a full colour cover and 152 monochrome pages of text and photographs. It is a limited edition of 200 copies.
