Retired Deputy Headteacher, Derek Cockell, became a member of The Wainwright Society at its formation in 2002. He joined the Management Committee in 2010 as Publicity Officer and in 2013 was elected as Society Secretary serving in that role until he ‘retired’ in 2020.
His book is a personal appreciation of the life and work of Alfred Wainwright, in particular his unique writing style in over fifty published books together with his incomparable penmanship in creating the many beautiful pen and ink drawings that illustrate his work.
The book seeks to define Wainwright’s purpose and mission that was articulated in his writing. His was a life lived in harmony with upland landscapes and Nature. For Wainwright it was the way to peace of mind, true happiness and contentment. His message was not strident, but quietly understated, perhaps hoping it would be absorbed gently into the psyche of his readers, that they would experience the same joy as he had in exploring the natural world, that they would find their own way.
As Eric Robson writes in his Foreword: ‘For anyone wanting to understand what truly inspired AW and what drove him to interpret his favoured places with such skill, this is essential reading.’
The book, hardcover with dust jacket, has 164 pages and the text is illustrated with over 90 of Wainwright’s sketches taken from 35 of his books, most of which are now out of print.
