This once out-of-print book is now available to order!
This is the first book to be published by The Wainwright Society following an agreement with the Estate of A. Wainwright. The aims in republishing some titles are to keep the books in print as well as meeting one of the principal objects of the Society: to keep alive the fellwalking traditions promoted by AW through his guidebooks and other publications.
A Pennine Journey describes an eleven-day journey from Settle in Yorkshire to Hadrian’s Wall and back by Alfred Wainwright as Britain faced the prospect of war with Germany. It depicts the landscape and people of the time, and reveals Wainwright’s attitude to them. It is a travelogue, a genre popular in the 1930s, and describes the landscape and people Wainwright met along the way and gives a revealing insight into his attitudes and beliefs at that time.
The book lay unpublished for 48 years and is considered by many to be AW’s finest work. This new edition includes additional material produced by Wainwright at the time it was written in 1938, and which was not included in previous editions. The book is printed in paperback format with 232 text pages and a full colour cover.
We are delighted to announce that the first printing of our updated A Pennine Journey sold out in December 2021 and we are now delivering books from the recently received ‘Second Impression’.
