It is nearly ten years since the Society ran its first Poetry Competition. This was very successful and we thought that this would be an ideal time to run a second competition. Like the first one, this will be open to members (including family members) only. ‘Poems’ can be in any format, for example – a sonnet, limerick, free verse, an ode, an elegy – whatever you wish.
Here are some simple ‘rules’.
The subject must relate to AW, his work or locations he is associated with, or Society activities. Entries, which should be no longer than sixty lines, must be original pieces of work and written entirely by the member (or member’s family) and not previously published in any format.
Entries should be typed, preferably as a Word document, and submitted by email to poetrycompetition@wainwright.org.uk.
The email must include your full name, membership number and a contact telephone number for any queries. Members may submit up to three items (clearly separated from each other), but included within the same email.
If anyone in your immediate family was under the age of sixteen at 31 March 2020 and wishes to enter, they will be very welcome; you must clearly identify the entrant’s age and relationship to the member when you send in this form of entry. If there is a sufficient number of such entries, these will be judged as a separate category.
We may wish to publish entries in future Footsteps issues and possibly create a Society Anthology for sale or free to members. (If sold any profits would go to our nominated 2020 charity, The Lake District Calvert Trust). By entering the competition, permission will be deemed to have been given by you to the Society to use your entry in this way, unless you specifically state otherwise. You will, of course, retain the copyright.
An appropriate judging panel will be set up and will decide on the winning entry or entries. The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence on individual entries will be entered into – please note that this competition is intended primarily to be a light-hearted and enjoyable event.
There is no entry fee. A small, but appropriate, prize will be awarded for the winning entry or entries (and possibly to runners up) at the discretion of the judges.
The closing date for entries is 31 July 2020. Winner(s) will be announced as soon as possible thereafter, by e-bulletin and in Footsteps.
Have fun!
