2025 is the 70th anniversary of the publication of the first Pictorial Guide, The Eastern Fells, (1955), and also the 60th anniversary of the official opening of the Pennine Way in 1965.
In the Spring issue of Footsteps, the Society’s magazine, we’ll be taking a closer look at this classic 268-mile walk from the Peak District to the Scottish borders which played a significant part in the Alfred Wainwright story.
The Society was kindly donated a series of unpublished letters written by AW, which relate to the Pennine Way. We’ll examine this correspondence between AW and the landlords of the Border Hotel at Kirk Yetholm. We also include the first part of a well-researched story about the four men who surveyed the Pennine Way in preparation for AW’s 1968 guidebook, Pennine Way Companion.
