23 Society members met at the cloisters in Kirkby Stephen and Mark led us on an excellent walk to the summit of Nine Standards Rigg (2171 ft 662m), following the route of our latest National Trail the Coast to Coast. There was a great view all round from the summit but there was a bite to the wind.

The descent initially followed the route of ascent but took a variation following Ladthwaite beck through some lovely bluebell woods on a single file path. The walk also included viaducts with Podgill the second that we crossed.

Kate took the opportunity of thanking Mark for his organisational skills in running another successful year of the Society’s Challenge Walks, as he will be retiring from this role at the end of the year.

After a thoroughly good day out there was the opportunity to enjoy fish and chips, as Alfred Wainwright did, in the Coast to Coast chip shop.
