Our 2024 Challenge celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Alfred Wainwright’s “The Outlying Fells of Lakeland”, first published by the Westmorland Gazette in 1974 and revised by Chris Jesty in 2011. Many regard this as Book Eight of the Pictorial Guides.
The walks follow those AW describes in the 56 chapters of his book. He dedicated the Outlying Fells, lovingly, to ‘the old-timers on the fells’. However, these ‘foothills’ enable walkers of all ages to enjoy the beauty and the variety of experiences they provide: charm, remarkable landscapes, ancient monuments, fine panoramas and solitude.
AW wrote, ‘The satisfaction derived from a successful climb becomes even keener with the passing years. Fellwalking is a pastime for life.’
