The 2025 Challenge celebrated the 70th Anniversary of Alfred Wainwright’s The Eastern Fells, first published in 1955.
This was the first book published by Wainwright in his Pictorial Guides series, long admired by generations of Lake District walkers.
Society members visited each of the 35 felltops by the routes described in the book as well as other notable landmarks highlighted by Wainwright, a total of 90 separate walks.
AW wrote of the Eastern Fells: ‘This is an area easily accessible … and much frequented by walkers. It has in Helvellyn the most-often-climbed mountain in Lakeland and in Grisedale Pass one of the best-known footpaths.’
