The 2026 Challenge celebrated the designation as a National Trail of Alfred Wainwright’s route from St. Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, which he described in A Coast to Coast Walk, first published in 1973

The 2026 Challenge celebrated the designation as a National Trail of Alfred Wainwright’s route from St. Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, which he described in A Coast to Coast Walk, first published in 1973. Since then, thousands of adventurers have completed this journey, encountering varied and stunning landscapes, and finding evidence of historical settlements and industries.

Between them, Society members completed every section of the Coast to Coast, a total of 77 separate Challenge walks, including alternatives to Wainwright’s route, visits to locations and landmarks highlighted in his pictorial guide, and the Lyke Wake Walk.

Describing this charismatic route as ‘a journey of delight’, AW wrote: ‘You could not have a better-defined start and finish, each with the waves lapping your boots’.
