Wainwright Photographic Competition 2019
Thirty-six Society members submitted a total of 101 images for the 2019 Photographic Competition, which was judged by photographer and film-maker Terry Abraham. This year, there was one class – Open.
The results are displayed below with the Judge’s comments:
Open Class
Winner: Jeff Coates Member 443 Ullswater steamer heading to Glenridding
I had to do a double-take when I first saw this photo as I could’ve sworn it was one of my own! A superbly composed shot featuring one of the Ullswater steamers heading for Glenridding with the flanks of Helvellyn looming large in the background. I love this image particularly for it’s use of focal length with the lens used. It affords a sense of majesty and scale as England’s third highest peak stands proud overlooking Ullswater. A view I’m terribly familiar with given I don’t live far away and also from filming ‘Life of a Mountain: Helvellyn’; hence I had to look twice at the picture! A wonderful photo and a much-deserved winner. You can’t beat a bit of winter light and snow to set the scene in this composition either.
Runner-up: Elaine Hudson Member 3876 Great Door, Yewbarrow
Another scene I’m familiar with from filming Scafell Pike a few years ago. What’s striking about this image is it’s the sense of scale. The portrait format works well and the view is marvellous from Yewbarrow of course but what makes this really work is the person standing within the frame. Lovely composition with that detail of someone admiring the view to draw you in and wished you could be there to savour it all too! It would make a good magazine cover.
