Congratulations to Ian Nelson and Nick Webster, Winner and Runner-up respectively, of the Society’s 2022 Photographic Competition

Terry Abraham (judge): This photo, ‘makes for a pleasing image as the composition is extremely good! It follows the rule of thirds and even though some may find the path leading into the frame towards Castle Crag lacking interest, in this case it really works due to the thick frosts that envelop the scene. I also like the tonal range too. The red and purple hues contrast markedly with the white of the frosts and the blue sky. This is a photo that most definitely encourages the viewer to get out and explore!’

Ian Nelson judged the runner-up photo. He commented: ‘This birch tree on Whitbarrow is one that l, and probably many hundreds of walkers, have tried to capture over the years. But this is probably the best I have seen. Making the image black and white was masterful. It brings out the drama of the tree having been shaped by prevailing westerlies over many years. The simplicity of the composition gives it a stark mood which is accentuated by the monochrome sky. In colour, this image would have been good. In black and white, it is great. One final musing — I wish I’d thought of it.’
The Society would like to thank the members who submitted entries and Terry Abraham for judging the Winner. As I received the entries for this year’s Photographic Competition I was struck by the variety of the seasons. There was a really good mixture that captured nature’s beauty throughout the year, showcasing what each season had to offer. It just goes to show that there is variety in those who take the photos, too; some enjoy a low-level mirror image water shot on a calm summer’s day, whilst others enjoy getting up high on the snowy fells to capture a 360-degree view of majestic, white-covered mountain tops.
